Have You Been To The Outer Banks in North Carolina?

The Outer Banks of North Carolina are a group of islands found close to the border of Virginia,  extending for about 120 miles up to Ocracoke Island. The Outer Banks is a world-famous tourist destination thanks to the many natural and historic points of interest. It is also America’s first beach. The Outer Banks earliest residents are believed to have been the Native Americans as well as some other larger communities, including the Algonquins and Poteskeet.

Historical Significance

One of the initial battles of the Civil War took place at the Outer Banks. The islands also played a significant role during World War I and II, because German ships along with U-boats would dock there, leading to many casualties on American soil.

Outer Banks is also the place where the Wright Brothers successfully had their first flight in 1903. Another reason for Outer Banks’ historical significance is “The Lost Colony”. This is a great American mystery colony that is said to have been established in the islands and then allegedly disappeared inexplicably.

Points of Interest

There are several lighthouses on the Outer Banks, some of them providing direction to sailors to date. They include the world’s tallest Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, which stands at 208ft in height. The other is the Currituck Beach Lighthouse that has a First Order Fresnel Light and is the largest light among American Lighthouses.

There are others that include the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse, the Bodie Island Lighthouse, and the smallest and oldest – the Ocracocke Island Lighthouse. Other places that draw lots of tourists include the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, The Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, and the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, among many other historic sites.

Industries

Outer Banks thrives on several industries, the most significant one being the tourism industry. Each year, more than 5 million tourists visit Outer Banks due to its various points of interest. Other major industries in the islands include construction, real estate, as well as commercial fishing. Recreational fishing is also practiced in Outer Banks.

Real Estate

Outer Banks’ Association of Realtors MLS reported that the median price for residential units in 2017 was $339,000 and by the end of May 2017, 635 units had been sold. The 2016 median price was $325,000. The average price of housing units was at its highest in 2017 compared to the preceding 8 years, indicating that the real estate market here is hot!
