The City Of Charlottesville At A Glance

The City of Charlottesville is the 38th largest county in the state of Virginia, covering an area of 10.4 square miles. It lies within the Piedmont Plateau near the Blue Ridge Mountains, and borders the Rivanna River. However, it has no water bodies. It is around 100 miles from Washington D.C., and 70 miles from Richmond in Virginia.

Charlottesville came into existence in the pre-colonial days, but it officially got its town status in the year 1762 through an Act of the Virginia General Assembly. Later on, in the year 1888, Charlottesville was incorporated as an independent city. This new status transformed it into an autonomous area, running all its affairs independently. It has its own boundaries and does not pay tax to any other county.

Currently, the City of Charlottesville is a multi-functional region in Virginia. It acts as the economic, educational and cultural center of Central Virginia.

Population Statistics

The 2010 census showed that the population of Charlottesville had reached 43,475 people. Later research by the American Community Survey showed that in 2015, the population had grown to 45,084 people.

Although population statistics for the City of Charlottesville are collected as an entity on its own, the US Census Bureau also identified it as a Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA), meaning that whenever population data is taken, other counties are included. These counties are Albemarle, Nelson, Greene, and Fluvanna. The estimated population for the SMSA in 2014 was 200,000.
